Betty Paige, Babylon, Burlesque

With all my university projects handed in I've finally got time to catch up with all my favourite fashion publications on and offline. The one below, entitiled 'Hackney Road Babylon' made me choke on my cuppa, it ties in perfectly with all the burlesque and pin up styles I've been looking at for my university project! The combination of beautiful garments, edgy, unique looking models and a gritty, urban environment is what always makes the Vice photo shoots so interesting, I particularly like this one because it reminds me of Betty Paige!

Speaking of Betty Paige, if you you have never seen 'the Notorious Betty Paige' then you should be ashamed of yourself!

Eat my shorts

Saturday, March 24,1984. Shermer High School, Shermer, Illinois, 60062. Dear Mr. Vernon, We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did was wrong. But we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. What do you care? You see us as you want to see us - in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed.

Ah man, I love The Breakfast Club so much. I'm completely infactuated with John Bender for the whole film, anyone else?

Let's all watch TEE VEE

I went to a film night at the Tate Modern some time last year called birds of paradise, a celebration of fashion in film. After some hardcore youtubing I've found a couple of the video's, the colours and fabrics are amazing in these and the music is beautiful so keep your eyes peeled (imagine if you actually had to peel your eyes, like everyday, gross) and your ears open.

Ten ...clear bottles hanging from a tree

At university I'm currently doing a project on detail. Our research for this project should come from an object you can collect (have I blogged this project before? Having blog-ja vue), I've been collecting bottles, which isn't very challenging when you live with students.

Researching the history of bottles (shut up) I found a few stories that say it was believed bottles caught evil spirits because of the whistling noise that's made when air passes over the top of a bottle, you know like when you blow the edge of the lip? So people, probably women lets be honest, left them on their doorstep to prevent evil spirits entering their household. QUITE INTERESTING.

As part of my research I hung bottles from a tree and my mate Will took pictures of them for me. It was actually pretty windy, I wonder if I caught any ghouls...

Carlos Arroyo Galaxia

Carlos Arroyo Galaxia's series 'I wish you were me' gives me goosebumps all over, there's something about it that feels very personal and the colours work together so well. Read more here.

The Red Shoes

Everyones been banging on about Black Swan for my entire life. I saw it recently and I felt like it had been completely over hyped, costumes are alright but not AMAZING, expected far more from Rodarte. Also, Mila Kunis blows Natalie Portman out of the water. Blaah.
ANYWAY
Enough about Black Swan, all that nonsense reminded me of The Red Shoes, which I feel is much much better. The costumes are beautiful, that colour palette of nudes, reds and light blues combined with Jean Short's (what a babe) amber hair give the whole film a really surreal, dreamy feel. Also, Brian Easdale composed the music for the film and it compliments the storyline beautifully. Oh yeah and it's Tim Walkers favourite film so it's obviously much better than Black Swan.

Girl Power Forever

I've got really into music again recently after last years late night zombie sessions to radio one dubstep (if it's not live don't bother). Today I've been sewing frantically to female fronted bands. These are my favourites.

From top: Blondie, Transvision Vamp, Bikini Kill, Garbage, X Ray Spex, Hole, Juliette and The Licks, The Slits, Siouxsie and The Banshees aaaaaand The Raincoats.

The Addams family started...

I just watched Addams family values for the first time in years, I forgot how amazing it is and the outfits are absolutely fantastic, especially Wednesday's peter pan collars. This winter I'm going to be a goth.
